Bronchoscopy
Bronchoscopy basically is an endoscopic procedure which is used to utilize inside of airways for therapeutic & diagnostic purposes. An instrument inserted either through nose or mouth into air passages allows surgeon to examine patient’s airways for abnormalities. Occasionally Bronchoscopy is also done through tracheostomy. Common purpose of examination includes looking out for inflammation, tumors, bleeding or foreign bodies lodged inside. Specimens for pathological examination may also be obtained from inside of lungs using Bronchoscopy. Patients are normally given anti-anxiety & anti-secretory medications prior to performing flexible Bronchoscopy. Rigid Bronchoscopy is however performed under the influence of general anesthesia.
Laryngoscopy
Medical procedure called Laryngoscopy is normally performed to obtain view of glottis & the vocal folds. Laryngoscopy is aimed to facilitate several surgical procedures under general anesthesia like tracheal intubation or cardiopulmonary resuscitation or other procedures on larynx & other areas of upper tracheobronchial tree. Direct Laryngoscopy procedures are normally done in operation theatres equipped with full preparedness for resuscitative measures so as to deal with respiratory distress conditions. At least ten different types of laryngoscope are used in Laryngoscopy, each with specialized use for specific purposes.
Tympanoplasty
Tympanoplasty is a surgical procedure performed for reconstruction of eardrum and/or small bones of middle ear; whereas Myringotomy refers to repair of tympanic membrane alone. Myringotomy surgical procedure creates a tiny incision in eardrum so as to relieve pressure caused by an excessive build-up of fluids or to drain pus. Subsequently, a tympanostomy tube is inserted into eardrum which aerates middle ear for a prolonged time & prevents re-accumulation of fluids. In the absence of tube, incisions are usually found to spontaneously heal within two or three weeks. Depending upon type & circumstances, this tube is either extruded naturally or removed through a minor procedure in 6 to 12 months. People requiring Myringotomy usually have dysfunctional or obstructed Eustachian tube which is unable to ventilate or perform drainage without aid.
Parotidectomy
Surgical excision or removal of Parotid gland located high in the neck just below ears is called Parotidectomy. Salivary ducts which carry produced & released saliva fun through insides of both cheeks from each gland. Surgery on this large & major salivary gland is typically performed because of neoplasm tumors which grow rapidly & abnormally by cell division. Neoplasm is either benign or malignant. However, majority of parotid tumors are benign with only about 20% are known to be malignant. Parotidectomy surgical procedures are generally performed by otolaryngologists.
Septoplasty
Septoplasty is utilized as a corrective surgical procedure to straighten nasal septum which is the partition between both nasal cavities. Normally, septum is supposed to run down the center of nose. But when it deviates into any one of the two cavities, it narrows cavity passage while impeding airflow. Often as result, inferior turbinate on opposite side enlarges. This condition is known as compensatory hypertrophy. Many a times these deviations of septum lead to nasal obstruction. Most Septoplasty surgeries are completed within an hour or less. Recovery time may however take several weeks. This procedure is quite often combined with Rhinoplasty, which is a cosmetic correction procedure for aesthetic deformities of the external nasal frame.
Tonsillectomy
Tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure through which each tonsil is removed from recess located in the side of pharynx within tonsillar-fossa. Surgery is normally performed in response to recurrent arracks of acute tonsillitis. Other conditions calling for Tonsillectomy include nasal airway obstruction, obstructive sleep apnea, snoring, Diphtheria carrier-state, or peritonsillar abscess.
Parathyroidectomy
Normally performed so as to remove parathyroid glands or parathyroid tumors which are located right behind thyroid in the neck area, Parathyroidectomy surgery can last anywhere between 1 to 3 hours. Parathyroid glands help body control levels of calcium in blood. Normally performed under general anesthesia, 2-4 inch surgical incision is mostly made at the center under the Adams’ Apple, on the neck for this procedure. Surgeons will subsequently look for 4 parathyroid glands through this incision & remove any that are diseased. In rare cases where all four have to be removed, a part of one is essentially transplanted back into the forearm. Other associated alternative procedures of Parathyroidectomy include Minimally Invasive Parathyroidectomy, Video-Assisted Parathyroidectomy & Endoscopic Parathyroidectomy. This surgical procedure is typically recommended in hyperparathyroidism, where any one or more parathyroid glands are producing excessive parathyroid hormone. The main cause behind creation of hyperparathyroidism is a small benign (non-cancerous) tumor called adenoma depending upon factors like age, calcium levels in blood & urine, associated symptoms.
Cochlear Implantation Surgery
Cochlear Implants (CI) are digital hearing aids for persons who have severe hearing loss or are profoundly deaf. Most often the primary cause of deafness in such cases is due to damage of sensory hair cells in cochleas area. Cochlear hearing implants can enable such patients’ sufficient hearing to understand speech & environmental sounds. Latest devices with processing strategies also allow patients enjoy music & hear better even in noise. Cochlear Implant costs in India are low & affordable & with a talented pool of hearing specialists perform requisite operations to conveniently install.
Stapedectomy
A surgical procedure of middle ear primarily performed to improve hearing is called Stapedectomy. The stapes footplate is normally mobile but results in conductive hearing loss in a fixed position due to abnormal mineralization called otosclerosis. Congenital malformation of stapes is another common reason for hearing loss. It is however possible to improve hearing by replacing stapes bone with a micro prosthesis. Stapedectomy makes it possible by creating a small hole in fixed stapes footplate & inserting a tiny prosthesis called stapedotomy which is piston-like. The results are most reliable in patients suffering from otosclerosis.
Thyroidectomy
Surgical removal of all or part of thyroid gland is called Thyroidectomy. Located at the base of neck, this butterfly-shaped gland produces hormones which regulate aspects of metabolism. Thyroidectomy is primarily used for treating thyroid disorders like cancer, goiter (non-cancerous enlargement) & hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). Amount of thyroid removal depends upon reason for surgery. However, thyroid may be able to normally function after surgery in partial thyroidectomy, but patients undergoing total thyroidectomy will need to take daily treatment of thyroid hormone so as to replace natural function of the removed thyroid gland.
Voice Surgeries
Most voice disorders are either result of tumor or extra growth over finely tuned vocal cords. Surgical intervention on these finely tuned tender vocal cords need precision. Advanced robotic laser technology & operating microscopes are often used to attain these goals. Common symptoms of voice & swallowing problems include experiencing pain, lack of control, discomfort & difficulty while speaking. These are found to result from overuse, aging, smoking, surgery or throat cancer including medical conditions like laryngitis, vocal cord paralysis, benign growths, cancer of vocal cord & spasmodic dysphonia. Removal of vocal cord tumors & throat reconstructive surgery are a couple of voice surgery examples. Complex reconstructive surgery procedures are often planned in tandem with audiologists & speech therapists.
Uvulopalatoplasty
Performed to reduce or eliminate snoring, Uvulopalatoplasty surgery removes all or part of uvula. Often performed as an out-patient treatment where laser is used to remove all or parts of uvula, the procedure usually involves 3-5 visits for treatment, with each lasting about 30 minutes. Generally performed under local anesthesia, most normal functions can be resumed immediately after operation. Principal side-effect of Laser-Assisted Uvulopalatoplasty or LAUP is severe sore-throat which can last for about 7-10 days. While speaking is usually unaffected, CO2 type laser is generally used.
