3D Liposuction Abdomen Lower Back

Various Liposuction Procedures For Effective Weight-loss Solution

The other names of liposuction are lipoplasty, suction lipectomy or lipo and this is a popular type of aesthetic or cosmetic surgery which helps breaks up the deposited fat in various parts of the body and then sucks it out. The most common parts of the body on which the liposuction procedure is performed are – chin, neck, arms, calves, abdomen, thighs and back. A hollow instrument called cannula is inserted under the skin and the fat is removed with its help. The suction action is provided by a high pressure vacuum which is applied to the cannula.

Liposuction permanently removes all the fat deposits from the body and can alter the shape of the body. However, it is necessary to lead a healthy lifestyle after the operation i.e. to eat healthy food and exercise regularly otherwise the remaining fat cells can grow larger. Also there is a limit to the amount of fat that can be safely removed from the body.

Types of Liposuction Procedures

There are many different types of liposuction procedures:

  • Tumescent technique – In this method local anesthesia is provided to large volumes of subcutaneous fats before the procedure
  • Dry technique – This technique has got its name due to the fact that no local anesthesia is injected into the fat before liposuction
  • Wet technique – In this technique approximately 1000 ml of local anesthesia with epinephrine are injected
  • Super wet technique – Less than half the volume of local anesthesia used for tumescent technique – which is highly diluted – is used in this method.
  • Ultrasonic – this technique is also known as Ultrasonic assisted Liposuction (UAL) and uses a metal paddle to deliver ultrasonic waves and heat into the fat lying below the skin.
  • Vaser liposuction – This technique is also known as Liposelection and is completely different from traditional liposuction.
  • Laser liposuction – In this technique a lot of tumescent fluid is used and a microcannula is inserted through a small incision which delivers laser heat and energy to the subcutaneous fat.

Who is a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

The ideal candidates for liposuction are people who have a stable body weight, but would prefer to remove undesirable fat from particular parts of the body. Hence one can say that liposuction is not really a remedy for obesity and is not an overall weight loss method.

What do I Need to Know before Undergoing Liposuction?

Before you opt for liposuction you need to understand that this is a partially invasive procedure and involves all the risks of such a procedure. Another thing that you need to understand is that this is not a weight loss procedure because it aims at reducing inches and not pounds. Although liposuction removes the fat permanently from the body, you need to maintain a healthy diet and include exercise in your regime in order to maintain the results that you have gained. Also keep in mind that there are some risks involved with liposuction and you need to understand these risks and weigh them against the possible positive outcomes of the procedure.

Risks Associated with Liposuction

There are many risks associated with the procedure of liposuction. Some of the most ones include:

  • Infections –Just like any other surgery, infections can occur after liposuction. This is the reason that some doctors prescribe anti biotics to all patients who have undergone liposuction.
  • Embolism – when fat is loosened and enters the blood through the blood vessels which have ruptured during liposuction, embolism can occur. Pieces of fat become trapped in the blood vessels, come together in lungs and can also travel to the brain.
  • Visceral perforations – It is not possible to see the cannula or probe during the procedure of liposuction which is why it can damage internal organs. For instance intestines may get punctured during liposuction of the abdomen. In such cases major surgery may be required and these visceral perforations can also be fatal.
  • Seroma – serum, which is a straw colored liquid from the blood, may start pooling in areas where the tissue has been removed after liposuction
  • Nerve compression – A person undergoing liposuction may experience parethesias which is an alteration in the sensation at the site of the procedure. The sensitivity of that area may increase causing pain or loss of feeling may occur. If these changes persist for a long time you should see a doctor.
  • Toxicity from anesthesia – A drug that numbs the skin called lidocaine is often used as a general anesthetic during the procedure. An overdose of this drug may be injected causing restlessness, light headedness, tinnitus, drowsiness, slurred speech, numbness of lips and tongue, metallic taste in the mouth, shivering, convulsions and muscle twitching. Lidocaine toxicity can cause the heart to stop and hence can be fatal.

Liposuction Treatment Overview

Liposuction is a treatment that helps remove excess of fat from the body with the help of suction. Tiny cuts or incisions are made on the stomach area through which small thin tubes known as cannula are inserted into the body and fat is suctioned out. This is done under general anesthesia to ensure highest level of comfort during the surgery. The treatment does not require an overnight stay but does require high level of nursing and good medical treatment.
